What are colored thermal transfer ribbons?

Colored thermal transfer ribbons print text and barcodes in ink colors other than black. They use the same thermal transfer principle as standard ribbons — a coated ink layer melts from the PET base film onto the label — but the formulation is pigmented, letting brands reproduce logo colors, signal categories or improve label legibility directly at print time instead of pre-printing label stock.

Choosing the base formulation

Colored ribbons are available in wax, wax-resin and resin families. The selection logic is the same as for black ribbons: wax suits paper labels for indoor use, wax-resin balances cost and durability on coated papers and some films, and resin delivers the chemical, heat and scratch resistance required by synthetic films and textile care labels. Colored inks are formulated to keep sharp edge definition so barcodes stay within grade on scanners.

Can you match a specific brand color?

Standard nine-color range is available from stock; custom color matching is handled as an OEM project. Send us your Pantone reference for evaluation.

Do colored ribbons scan as well as black?

For barcode elements, contrast against the label background is what matters. On white paper labels, darker colors such as red, blue and green scan reliably; light colors like yellow and white are recommended for logos and text while barcodes stay black. We validate scannability with sample prints before bulk production.

Which color should I use on dark films?

White and silver are the standard choices for printing on dark or transparent synthetic films, typically in resin formulations for adhesion and abrasion resistance.
